Planted just May 13th, this beautiful summer squash is really taking off! The variety is an heirloom called 'Trombetta di Albenga' from Renee's Garden .

Next time you need a way to display your orchids (especially if the leaves dip lower than the pot)...
...check out the candle section of a thrift store. The stands make inexpensive, beautiful displays for orchids.
The dangly hangers work well for tillandsias too!

Despite the fact that I should wait until after Mother's Day I decided to get my annuals going early. Here's the porch before...
...and this is after (not much different yet, but when the vines get going it will be.)
The basket above already had a nice mix of flowers, but I added an ivy for more contrast.
I only bought one lavender, and I get itchy when there isn't Garden Broadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15657219826611994631noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-703329347797527646.post-498177396486800082015-10-03T20:17:00.002-05:002015-10-03T20:18:17.039-05:00The Insistence of Life
Look what I found growing from a crack in the pavement next to a garage in my apartment parking lot! A tomato plant with fruit!
I was walking by and tend to notice weeds, bugs, and pretty much anything but the other humans around me. When I spotted this, it just blew my mind.
Has anyone else ever seen anything like this before?
I never thought of a vegetable (Garden Broadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15657219826611994631noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-703329347797527646.post-43389527600598044372015-10-03T20:03:00.003-05:002015-10-03T20:03:59.079-05:00Autumn Orchids Our keiki project phalaenopsis orchid is blooming beautifully, but I'm still not really seeing a "baby plant" where I started the keiki. No leaves or roots yet...
...but if the green stem-looking thingies all turn into bloom scapes like this one I'll be happy!
The green vanilla orchid has reached the top of the tree fern pole, so I'm trying to encourage it to grow the other way. The whole thing started when I decided to bring in and repot my recently-acquired jasmine plant. Night temps were dipping into the 50's, so I wanted to begin bringing in the houseplants.
First I made room by removing dead plants. So long, african violet. You were awfully pretty for several years (six I think!) I'm finally doing something with my poor Tolumnia 'Tequila Sunrise' orchid.
Just one green part left-see all the dead sections? I've been a negligent orchid mommy :(
Poor thing has roots roaming all around the pot.
Oh yea, root-bound to the max!
Spread them all out...

My bloom scape on the keiki is looking great!
Plus I still have what appears to be a growing baby plant as well, I'm anxious to see what happens.
I had a weak moment at Home Depot and got this jasmine for $1.98-it still has some sweet-smelling blooms on it.
They had perennials on sale too, so I got three Garden Broadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15657219826611994631noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-703329347797527646.post-17498361628647962772015-08-12T12:59:00.000-05:002015-08-12T12:59:01.807-05:00Outdoor Plants 2015
My big brugmansia died a few months ago, so I got a new one from a dear friend who grew it from a cutting I'd given her off of mine. Kinda bushy and I like them in tree form...

It's official-one of these branches is a bloom scape!
I'm hoping the other two stems coming from the keiki site will still develop as a new orchid, but two more bloom scapes will be alright too. I must say, so far this project has been great fun. Stay tuned for further developments...

The keiki project on my Phalaenopsis Happy Girl is growing like crazy!
The tips are looking like bloom buds though, so I'm anxious to see how this plays out.
No sign of roots or anything at the source point, either.
The smallest orchids are doing well, aside from the Tolumnia Tequila Sunrise. Well here we are just 14 days later and presto! Keiki growth!

I've decided to use my Phalaenopsis 'Happy Girl' for a keiki-growing experiment. What is a keiki? According to the folks at RePotme orchids, it's when "an orchid plant will bear a little plantlet off of its flower stem or pseudobulb". I bought this kit from them to encourage my orchid to grow one.
The steps really are easy...
...and I had Garden Broadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15657219826611994631noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-703329347797527646.post-29096931789640762672014-04-12T19:18:00.005-05:002014-04-12T19:18:53.544-05:00Spring Blooms Spring is finally here! Even though I'm still in an apartment and not gardening outside, I wanted some bulbs to enjoy. So I picked up this hyacinth at Walmart, and boy does it smell great!
While I was there, I gave in to my green urges and bought this nice large palm. Never had one before, so hopefully it will be happy in my houseplant family.

Yes, it is. Thanks for asking and commenting on the temps-Every. Single. Day. Fact is, people blathering on about the cold is the only thing I'm truly tired of. What I never tire of is thinking and talking about plants and gardening. So the next time some idiot insists on discussing the weather...

It may be cold outside, but my orchids are quite happy indoors. I've been running the humidifier every night while I sleep, adding the moisture they love (doesn't hurt my breathing, either.) My Phalaenopsis Happy Girl is getting ready to bloom for the third time since I bought her in 2012.
The most recent bloom scape has dried bits that need to be trimmed...

It's that time-first snow of the year. Amazingly my outdoor annuals and veggies are uninterested and still growing along, unphazed.
My 'Happy Girl' orchid is done blooming...
...but not all of the bloom scape has turned brown. Unfortunately the "budlets" that I'd hoped could become blooms shriveled away.

I've decided to re-mount my "Lady of the Night" orchid (Brassavola nodosa), so I gathered some supplies to get the job done...
